Acknowledging Up Front That You Don’t Have Permission to Email Doesn’t Make it OK

Remember my post from a while back How To Receive Email From Barnes & Noble? In that one, the company sent emails to users of their site, telling them that they hadn’t opted in to receive emails. Seemed kinda weird, right?

This is even weirder. This email was sent to a guy who obviously has some relationship with Berry Bros and Rudd, a wine and spirits merchant.

Maybe they were sampling their products when they came up with the idea to email people who they knew they didn’t have permission to email.

I can see some marketing team opening their third bottle of fine wine. One of them pipes up “Hey, what if we send emails to people who specifically HAVEN’T given us permission to contact them? We can beg them to change their mind about it, and then we can tell them all the wonderful things, like more email, they’ll get if they just agree. ”

“Great idea,” says another. “But let’s make sure to tell them we won’t sell their email address to anybody else. The last thing we’d want is for them to think they’ll end up getting unwanted email!”
